Femi Kuti announced he will release his new album, Day by Day, November 18th on Downtown Records new imprint, Mercer Street. Femi Kuti, son of Afrobeat founder and African musical legend Fela Kuti, hasn't released a studio album in seven years. His younger brother, Seun, recently stole the spotlight from Femi as Fela's progeny and afrobeat torchbearer with his 2008 release, Many Things. With this release Femi, is taking back the mission pushing Afrobeat to the next level.
As Fela's oldest son, Femi played in his legendary father's band, Egypt 80, from a young age. He later broke away from Egypt 80 to start his own band, Positive Force, which played at The Shrine, Fela's home club in Lagos, Nigeria, one night a week. Femi has long displayed his father's passion for social justice and political action, but has differed from Fela on many fronts including religious views and the threat of AIDS.
Femi collaborated with Mos Def, Common, and Jaguar Wright on his 2001 release, Fight to Win. On his new release, Day by Day, he emphasizes more of a jazz sound playing trumpet instead of saxophone on several tracks. Having spent seven years honing his style and learning to properly play the piano, Day by Day is expected to have a more refined, tight sound. After Seun's 2008 release, the world is eager to see what Femi has in store to stake his claim to Afrobeat's throne.
