Plot Outline: Martin Scorsese's remake of J. Lee Thompson's 1962 film is a stylish, taut thriller. Public defender Sam Bowden (Nick Nolte) served as the attorney for brutal rapist Max Cady (Robert De Niro) at his arraignment. After serving a hellish 14-year sentence in a barbaric state penitentiary, Cady seeks vengeance against the prosperous small-town lawyer.

Personal comments: Scorsese's paranoia thriller often descends deep into the dungeons of horror, a kind of psychological horror that, when it's not right in your face, lingers right underneath the surface of the cellulloid; paired with some graphic violence it gives the film an almost demonic edge. The film flies or dies with De Niro's performance, and the scenes without him still have a shadow of his menace cast over.

Moviebuffs take notice of copious Hitchcock references (most noticably 'Psycho').
