Secret Love 5 (compiled by Jazzanova) 2008
Rls. Date: 2008
Label: Sonar Kollektiv
Genre: Chillout, Lounge
Quality: VBRkbps / 44.1kHz / Joint-Stereo
Size: 95.8mb
Release Note:
Following on from the success of previous volumes, the Secret Love series continues to offer diverse material and interesting new directions for listeners looking for a hit of aural soul and folk. This compilation travels from the Wild West to outer-space, via Gillbert OSullivan.
Tracks of particular note include the Choir of Young Believers whose tune of sombre heartbreak entitled Things I Stole appears early on the album. Their album is hotly anticipated for release in early 2009 on Sonar Kollektiv. Next, Broken Promises by Quiet Village is an oxymoronic uplifting-downbeat number with plenty of soul. This chilled out track culminates in an Ennio Moricone Western-style whistling solo: pistols at dawn at the Quiet Village! Deeper Waters by Recloose is taken from the album Perfect Timing, released on Sonar Kollektiv in September 2008. This soulful song features the vocal talents of Joe Dukie from New Zealand reggae-minstrels Fat Freddys Drop. Love You Straight by Pop Levi is taken from the Never Never Love single on Counter Records. This is pure romantic pop, a merger of the production of 70s greats such as Electric Light Orchestra with a strange hint of Gillbert OSullivan-like vocals.
Things take an exotic turn with Savath & Savalas, a mellow tropicalia infused side-project from New York-Barcelona based Guillermo Scott Herren, an artist perhaps better known as Prefuse73, who has some notable releases on Warp under his belt. The Savath & Savalas moniker has created the freedom to release on B-Music, Twisted Nerve, Finders Keepers, and Hefty as well as on Ninja Tunes. The featured track Estrella De Dos Caras is a soulful tune that successfully fuses psychedelia with human emotion. The intoxicating Absynth by Woolfy Vs Projections originally came out in 2007 as a 12' on upcoming German nu-disco imprint Permanent Vacation. Absynth enters a distinctly chilled out groove with sparse synths.
The Rubies appear next, with their hit single I Feel Electric featuring the Canadian Fiest, who needs no introduction. 2008 has been a great year for The Rubies who recently playing alongside Jamie Lidell and Whitest Boy Alive. Their album Explode From The Center came out on Tell Records, the home of Royksopp, and this track exhibits these creative influences, whilst maintaining a distinct sound of their own. Thief - regular contributors to the series – provide Down, Down, which is remixed by Owusu into a mesmerizing and sublime space-pop number laced with broken beats and intricately cut samples. Finally Dublin based composer/producer Stee Downes completes this sensational soul-folk compilation. Destruction of Ourselves is his first solo release taken from his forthcoming debut album All In A Day, due for release on Sonar Kollektiv in November.
Destruction of Ourselves is a heartfelt finisher to the album, which seamlessly rounds of Secret Love 5, and yet again proves that the Jazzanova boys are more than able to take us on a smooth journey through varied aural terrain.
