Description:
Divertimento is the official re-edit of La Belle noiseuse into a two-hour film. Unlike alternate shorter versions of Love on the Ground, Joan the Maid, and Va Savoir, Divertimento was comprised of different takes from La Belle noiseuse, and Rivette made it to specifically create an entirely different film with a entirely different feel.

So with this in mind, the story of Divertimento is the same as La Belle noiseuse: a reclusive artist is commissioned to finish a painting he abandoned for emotional reasons many years prior. Now, with a new model, he must confront the very same demons that destroyed his first attempts to paint "La Belle noiseuse." Of course, you get a much lighter take on Rivette's original film, hence a divertimento. Because of this, I highly recommend watching La Belle noiseuse before watching Divertimento. Despite its length and its obsession with watching someone paint, La Belle noiseuse is as intense as cinema gets and Divertimento's avoidance of this intensity, as well as its adherence to a more normative form, is quite fascinating, even more so to Rivette fans and film students. But don't worry, Emmanuelle B�art is still naked for much of the time.
