The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo is the seventh incarnation of the long-running Hanna-Barbera Saturday morning cartoon Scooby-Doo. The final first-run version of the original 1969 - 1986 broadcast run of the series, it premiered on September 7, 1985 and ran for one season on ABC as a half-hour program. Thirteen episodes of the show were made in 1985. It replaced Scary Scooby Funnies (a repackaging of earlier shows, and another repackaged series, Scooby's Mystery Funhouse, followed.)

13 Ghosts attempted to give the show a more contemporary feel. It was also produced to capitalize on the success of the 1984 film Ghostbusters[citation needed]. Daphne and Shaggy were given redesigns to fit them into the mid-1980s style. They, along with Scooby and Scrappy, were joined in this season by a young Mexicano con-artist called Flim-Flam, and a warlock mentor, Vincent Van Ghoul, a parody of Vincent Price, who voiced the character as well. Fred and Velma were completely absent from the series, as they had been, save for a few episodes of The New Scooby-Doo Mysteries, since 1980. Unlike previous Scooby series where the ghosts were criminals in costumes, in this incarnation the ghosts are depicted as being real, thus also attempting to give this series a much darker tone while still keeping much of the lighthearted humor.

In the initial episode the gang are thrown off course on a trip to Honolulu in Daphne's plane landing instead in Tibet. While inside a temple, Scooby and Shaggy are tricked into opening the Chest of Demons which houses the thirteen ghosts and demons. The plot of this series was an ongoing one, which chronicled the gang's attempts to recapture the thirteen most terrifying ghosts and monsters that were imprisoned inside the chest. The show featured a lot of self-parody, pop culture references, and fourth-wall-breaking gags, typical of Looney Tunes shorts. This was the influence of associate producer Tom Ruegger, who would later go on to produce A Pup Named Scooby-Doo, Tiny Toon Adventures, and Animaniacs.

The 13 Ghosts of Scooby-Doo was the last series for which Heather North Kenney voiced Daphne. The series also marked the final Saturday morning Scooby series to feature Scrappy-Doo, and was the only Scooby series that had a pre-adolescent child (Flim Flam) become part of the Mystery, Inc. gang. The show was canceled by ABC in March 1986 and replaced with re-runs of Laff-a-Lympics. No new Scooby series was there to take its place that September, the first time in a decade-and-a-half that Scooby-Doo did not air on Saturday morning.

While in the Himalayas, the gang meets Flim Flam and Vincent, but Shaggy and Scooby are tricked into opening Chest of Demons, releasing 13 ghosts, which they then realize they must return to the chest.

The ghost Maldor the Malevolent wants the Wonder Wand of Zagras so he can destroy the kingdom but Scooby gets ahold of it and wont let him have it, so Maldor puts Daphne into the "Sleep of the Centuries".

When a Shadow Demon steals the Chest of Demons, the gang head over to Befudle Hall where the all kinds of ghouls will meet at midnight, when the powers of darkness will be strong enough to destroy the chest.

04/ Reflections in a Ghoulish Eye
The gang receives a telegram to meet Vincent at the Hotel Marrakesh, which is hosting the Paranormal Convention, but it turns out to be a trap, and an evil mirror is out to suck the gang into it.

05/ That's Monstertainment
While relaxing and watching a movie, "The Son of the Bride of the Ghost of Frankenstein", Scooby and the gang are sucked into the show by the demon, Zomba, who has trapped them for eternity while she finds the chest.

While taking a vacation cruise on the ship Queen Myrtle, because Scooby is stressed out, the gang realize they are headed for the Bermuda Triangle on a ship of ghouls, and the chest will open if they don't change course.

07/ A Spooky Little Ghoul Like You
When Vincent "falls in love" with an evil sorceress Nekara through the "Trance of Love", it's up to the gang to bring him to his senses before she drains him of all his powers.

The Demon Mist, Marcella, has given the "Black Book of Spells" to the Brewsky sisters, and the gang has to get it back before midnight when they will read the 13th spell, releasing her.

Scooby gets tired of ghosts and wants to quit ghost hunting, but when he is shown the future and sees Time Slime opens the Chest of Deamons and take over the earth, he has a change of heart.

10/ Scooby in Kwackyland
The evil Demondo imprisons the gang in the comics with a cosmic ink pen, and plans on using his spectral elixer to make printed monsters come to life, but everyone becomes trapped, and the pen is lost somewhere within the pages.

11/ Coast to Ghost
The kids are attending the Rose Parade in California, when they get a message from Vincent, who as accidentaly looked into the "Eye Of Eternity", and is turning solid. The only way to save him is to get the "Mask of Moomah" from the east coast and bring it too him, but the kids will have to trust Weerd and Boogle to find it.

The gang heads to Dooville, to visit Scooby's parents, and discover the Circus
Fantastique, run by Fantasmo, has come to town, and his calliope music is hypnotising people, so they don't see the place is really run by monsters.

13/ Horror Scope Scoob
When the gang makes an appearance on Boris Kreepoff's television show, Bogel and Weerd, aiding a "lion demon" named Zimbulu, switch off the lights and The Chest of Demons vanishes. Zimbulu and his cohorts, however, are not the culprits, so the gang winds up on a wild goose chase to discover the real thief.
